In Savannah, Georgia, Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation partnered with the American Warrior Initiative to honor a local U.S. veteran. A residential housing “Boot Camp” was held in collaboration with this event to train real estate professionals and mortgage planners on how to handle the home purchase needs of active duty and military veterans with excellence.
The honoree at the event, Winston Hencely, was a U.S. Army specialist serving in Afghanistan when he was injured during a suicide-bombing attack. Shrapnel hit him in the head and chest, causing him to endure a traumatic brain injury as well as many other shrapnel wounds. Although doctors told Hencely he would never walk again, Hencely persevered and was walking six months later.
At the event, Hencely was surprised with donations to pay for a service dog, Loki. Loki is in training at the SD Gunner Fund, and will help Hencely tremendously with his anxiety and PTSD, as well as his physical rehabilitation.

Founded by Louise Thaxton and Sean Parnell, the American Warrior Initiative is a non-profit organization sponsored by Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation, which seeks to ease the transition for U.S. veterans between military and civilian life.
